Sponsoring a child in Rural India
“The SOTE child sponsorship programme gives dignified life to children from poor communities”

Why Sponsor a child in rural India?
Sponsorship for the poorest and most disadvantaged rural children is just as relevant in southern India today as it has ever been.
The children waiting for sponsorship come from families who are shunned by the societies that they live alongside. Born into begging or tribal communities - outside the caste system - they are marginalised and neglected. Their parents are poor, often illiterate, and do not value education, denying their children the opportunity to escape the accident of their birth.

How does the scheme work?
The scheme focusses on helping the children complete full-time education, develop their innate abilities and build their confidence to realise their ambitions. It also provides help and assistance to their families and communities, which we know through over twenty-five years of experience is essential for success.
The scheme is run by dedicated qualified social workers; well-known and respected by the communities they work with. They monitor each child’s progress closely and visit the family regularly in their own homes. The families often need a great deal of help in gaining the government assistance that they are entitled to and to obtain essential Identity cards

How much does it cost to sponsor a child in India?
· Sponsoring a child costs £20 per month.
· Sponsorship starts whilst the child is at primary school and continues until they finish their secondary education.
· Part of the sponsorship fee is devoted to delivering appropriate services and assistance to the communities that the sponsored children live in.
Note: As a volunteer led charity with no paid employees our expenses are low which means that every penny of the fee is sent to the scheme in India.
What will I receive as a child sponsor?
On signing up you will receive a welcome pack giving details of the child and his or her family with a photograph. Thereafter you will get a report every six months.
Each Spring you will get a photo of the child and a progress report on the child and his or her family. In the Autumn, you'll receive a hand-drawn card, a unique message from your child, and a report on community activities funded by your sponsorship.
You can even write to your sponsored child!
You can write twice a year to your sponsored child, and you will receive a written reply with the next report. Many sponsors welcome this opportunity to engage more with the child that they sponsor.
Note: Unfortunately, it is not possible for you to send gifts to your child.
How SOTE Child Sponsorship has changed Bindu’s life
Bindhu, aged 11, lives with her parents and older sister. Her parents have no regular work and can only afford the cheapest of meals to feed her and her older sister.
Bindhu has been sponsored since starting school. Each year she receives school materials and uniform through sponsorship. She attends yearly educational trips and is supported with her homework at extra-curricular classes funded by sponsorship donations. At her school, hundreds of trees have been planted and the playground has been renovated.
With the encouragement of WWI, Bindhu’s mother has joined a local Women’s Self Help Group. Her mother has also set up a kitchen garden outside their home which is providing nutritious low-cost food.
In Bindhu’s village, there is a SOTE mobile clinic once every 15 days, providing free medical check-ups and medicines. Her performance at school is good and her teachers are very appreciative of her. She has grown to be quite self-confident.
