I am a retired United Reformed Church minister and a member of the Iona Community – a dispersed community that focuses on justice and peace. I was friends with Murray before Salt of the Earth and before he met Janet. In fact, I conducted their wedding; and in 1966, when I went to India on sabbatical, they introduced me to the work they were supporting.
To be taken behind the scenes, into the villages of Tamil Nadu and the lives of real people, and to be confronted by such poverty and such resilience, was life-changing for me. Salt of the Earth enables me to say: I have seen it for myself – the needs of the people and the effectiveness of projects helping communities to help themselves. When we give our money and time I know where it is going and how it will be used.
